Yandon-Dillon graduates adult CNA class

MINEVILLE Champlain Valley Tech has graduated its first adult class of certified nurse assistants from its Yandon-Dillon campus in Mineville. Shanon Kelly of Schroon Lake, Mary Tefoe of Witherbee, Patricia Safford of Witherbee, Amy Hoffay of Crown Point, Tina Marie Martin of Port Henry and Nasr-eddine Mohamed Oussaid of Port Henry received diplomas in a ceremony Feb. 14. The 10-week course, which included a five-week clinical experience at Horace Nye Nursing Home in Elizabethtown, gave students state certification needed to work in hospitals, nursing homes and private-duty settings. The New York certification is also valid in neighboring states. Theres a huge demand for health care professionals and its increasing, said Michael Miller, a registered nurse who taught the CNA course. As baby boomers grow older there is a greater need for health care intervention. Miller said CNAs have great flexibility. They can work full-time, part-time or per diem, he said. Many hospitals and nursing homes are even willing to support a CNA who wants to go on to nursing school, Miller said. Its a great way to get into the health care industry. Kelly is the valedictorian of the Mineville CNA class. She intends to continue her education at North Country Community College and become a registered nurse. Tefoe, the class salutatorian, hopes to begin work in the near future. She had her first job interview even before graduating. Miller said the CNA program is not only good for students, but for the community. This is a great benefit to the community, he said. Not only is it training local residents for good jobs, its providing health care professionals we all need. Martin said the class has been fun as well as educational. Mike is a lot of fun and a great teacher, she said of Miller. This has been a great experience and hes the main reason. Miller said Yandon-Dillon will host future CNA classes and have scheduled classes for EKG technicians and phlebotomy technicians. The next CNA course will be March 10 to June 6.
