Taxes too high

To the Editor: I own a home in Port Henry which is assessed at $150,000 which I can accept. But I pay more than $6,000 in taxes, which is ridiculously high. The village of Port Henry and the town of Moriah need to consolidate into one municipality. (Yes one less taxing entity, would, in fact, lower the overall taxes.) Realtors in Port Henry say that once an interested buyer finds out that there are three taxes (school, town and village), a lot the buyers will not buy property in the village. As far as I know, the tax rate here is higher than any other nearby town, including Westport and Essex. Lets lower the tax rate, by combining the governments of the town and the village, thus getting rid of redundancy, and making Port Henry a place people will want to move to. Jeffrey G. Kelly
