Schroon Lake sweeps championships

Wildcat girls down ELCS Schroon Lake won the Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference Northern Division crown in girls basketball action Feb. 12. The Wildcats downed Elizabethtown-Lewis, 36-27, in a one-game playoff at Moriah Central School. The teams had finished the regular season with 10-2 records. The win put Schroon into the MVAC title game last night against Southern Division champion Long Lake-Indian Lake. Schroon Lake used a rugged defense and clutch free throw shooting to beat ELCS. The Wildcats held ELCS to five points in the first half and held a 12-2 advantage at the free throw line. Ashley Whitty poured in a game-high 17 points for the Wildcats. Savannah Clark added seven points for the champs. Ticonderoga 54, Moriah 49 Ticonderoga edged Moriah, 54-49, in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference girls basketball action Feb. 11. The Sentinels grabbed an early lead, but Moriah battled back to tie the contest in the final period. The Vikings went cold in the last two minutes, however, and Ti secured the win. Julie Thompson scored 19 points for Ti. Kaylee Sprague had a big game for Moriah. She scored 21 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and added three assists. Chelsea McKiernan had 13 points for the Vikings. Schroon Lake 67, Keene 38 Schroon Lake grabbed an early lead and beat Keene, 67-38, in Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference girls basketball play Feb. 6. Schroon took control early, outscoring the Beavers, 18-8, in the first quarter before cruising to victory. Jessica Mehm poured in 21 points, including three from behind the arc, for the Wildcats. Ashley Whitty contributed 13 for the winners. Ticonderoga 49, Lake Placid 27 Ticonderoga grabbed an early lead and beat Lake Placid, 49-27, in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference girls basketball action Feb. 12. The Sentinels raced to a 20-7 lead and never looked back. Julie Thompson had 14 points for Ti. Juliann Mandy had 11 points and Samantha Diehl had 13 assists and four points for the Sentinels. Seton Catholic 45, Moriah 28 Moriah lost to Seton Catholic, 45-28, in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference girls basketball action Feb. 12. The Vikings stayed close most of the game, but Seton closed the contest with an 18-7 run for the victory. Kaylee Sprague led Moriah with 18 points. Willsboro 50, Crown Point 46 Willsboro edged Crown Point, 50-46, in Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference girls basketball play Feb. 8. Ashley Zapolski scored 17 points and Jordan McGinness 15 for the Panthers, who were within a point in the final quarter. Wildcat boys top Westport Schroon Lake won the Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference Northern Division crown in boys basketball action Feb. 12. The Wildcats downed Westport, 65-56, in a one-game playoff at Moriah Central School. The teams had finished the regular season with 11-1 records. The win put Schroon into the MVAC title game last night against Southern Division champion Long Lake-Indian Lake. Kyle Bush and Ethan Tyrrell combined for 49 points to pace Schroon. Schroon Lake led 21-16 after the first quarter and went up 35-27 at halftime. The Wildcats maintained their lead throughout as the closest the Eagles got was six points. Bush finished with 12 boards and three assists to go along with his game-high 29 points. Tyrrell had 20 points and four assists on the night. Ticonderoga 53, Moriah 33 Ticonderoga jumped to a big lead and beat Moriah, 53-33, in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference boys basketball play Feb. 8. The victory avenged a loss to the Vikings earlier in the season. The Sentinels raced to an 18-6 lead and were on top, 32-14, at the half. John Molina tallied 14 points, Jesse Clark 12 and Hunter Denno 11 for Ti. Hayden Whalen scored nine points for Moriah. Crown Point 58, Willsboro 29 Crown Point crushed Willsboro, 58-29, in Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference boys basketball action Feb. 8. John Budwick scored 15 points and grabbed 20 rebounds for the Panthers, who closed the first half with a 16-9 run to take control. Tony Rodriguez added 14 points and Jacob Spring 13 for Crown Point. ELCS 64, Crown Point 48 Elizabethtown-Lewis topped Crown Point, 64-48, in Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference boys basketball action Feb. 11. The Lions raced to a 20-7 lead and were never threatened. Justin Potter had 13 points and John Budwick 11 for Crown Point.
