WARRENSBURG Yearning for a getaway to Florida, but faced with an overdue property tax bill? The Town of Warrensburg will soon have a solution. Earn some airline miles and make that trip a reality by paying your taxes online with a credit card. The town of Warrensburg is likely to soon begin accepting online payments of town and county taxes including overdue 2008 taxes with Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express. Town officials are also looking toward offering electronic transfers from checking accounts. Wednesday, the town board endorsed a system of accepting the varied credit, debit and electronic checking payments through MuniTrax, an online tax payment firm based in Albany, Town Clerk Donna Combs said. The board also endorsed MuniTrax to accept other routine payments from the town including water and sewer bills, landfill punch-cards, and dog licenses, Combs said. These new conveniences may be available in a few weeks, she said. This brings the town into the Internet age, right up to 2008 where we should be, she said. The town wont lose the customary processing fees that businesses usually absorb, she said. The charges are added onto the bill for those using the service. For a credit-card charge, a fee of 2.8 to 3 percent would be added to the bill. For a payment up to $4,000, the taxpayer would be charged $4, and $4 more for each additional $4,000. Combs said she heard about the system at a recent conference of the New York State Tax Receivers and Collectors Association, of which she is president. This should make collections much more timely and cut down on tax delinquencies, she said. Its a very good thing. Town Supervisor Kevin Geraghty said it should boost efficiency in collections. We think it offers a significant convenience to taxpayers, he said. Its handy.
