PLATTSBURGH A reception was recently held at the Battle of Plattsburgh Association theater at the War of 1812 Museum to honor nine North Country students. The students participated in and received awards from the Battle of Plattsburgh Association-KeyBank Essay Contest Feb. 2. At the elementary level, Theo Gardner-Puschak of Oak Street Elementary School in Plattsburgh won first place; Justin Haverlick of Keene Valley Central School won second place; and Tara Danforth of Northern Adirondack Central School won third place. At the middle school level, Justin Lough of Schroon Lake Central School won first place; Gabriel Schrauf of Westport Central School won second place; and Connick Miller of Stafford Middle School in Plattsburgh won third place. At the high school level, Christine Wemette of Ausable Valley Central School won first place; Kelly Chilliari of Plattsburgh High School won second place; and Michelle Wemette of Ausable Valley Central School won third place. Participants in the contest were asked to write an essay in which they put themselves in the place of a young person connected with the Battle of Plattsburgh. Cash prizes, provided by KeyBank Foundation, were presented to first, second and third place winners in each category. The essay contest was sponsored by the KeyBank Foundation, the Battle of Plattsburgh Association and the North Country Teachers Resource Center.
