Castleton Lions Club celebrates 30th Annual Fishing Derby

CASTLETON -While skiing, snowmobiling and snowboarding are all popular winter sports, among the local's, nothing beats ice fishing derbies held in February to Marchice permitting! This year the Castleton Lions Club will hold its 30th Annual Lake Bomoseen Ice Fishing Derby on Feb. 16th and 17. This Derby is held in memory of Tom Evanoika and Bob Newton. Headquarters will be at Crystal Beach. With over $2700 in prize money and door prizes for children under 12, you dont have to catch the biggest fish to be a winner. There will be a 50-50 drawing both Saturday and Sunday. This year there will also be a raffle for the non-fishermen who want to participate. First prize is a hand-painted bench, a Hubbardton Forge fixture, 4-Tickets to the NOW FAMOUS Fish Fry (Held March 2nd), and a wine basket. Drawing will be on Sunday afternoon. You do not have to be present to win. Tickets are available at ALEDA DUTTON, BROKER (next to Lakes Region Laundromat). Tickets are 1 for $1.00 or 6 for $5.00. Only three hundred tickets will be sold. Tickets for the Derby are available at Toms Bait and Tackle. Besides the many prizes being given away, people will stop by throughout the day to look at the fish board and enjoy the hamburgers, hotdog's and homemade corn chowder at the snack shack. Coffee and soda will also be available. Fisherman from all the derbies are encouraged to donate fish for the Castleton Lions Club Fish Fry which will be held on March 2nd at the Trak Inn. This will be the 4th Annual Fish Fry. Besides enjoying all the homemade fish chowder, fish, (or chicken fingers) baked potato, green beans, rolls, and pies, there will be raffles and a mini auction. These two events precede the Annual Lions Club Auction held each year on the first Wednesday and Thursday of August. These three big fund raiser's, along with the scholarship drive are how the Lions raise money to put back into the community. Each year The Castleton Lions Club provides food baskets twice a year to local citizens in need; sponsor the kids Fishing Derby and Halloween Party; provides over $5000 in scholarships to worthy graduating seniors; sponsors students to the Kehoe Conservation Camp and help with funding for eye glasses and hearing aids to those are in need and help with other area and community causes as the need arises.
