Under-manned Schroon Lake downed Westport, 70-65, in overtime to grab first place in the Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference Northern Division boys basketball race Jan. 30. Playing with just seven players, the Wildcats finished the game with just five as two fouled out. Luckily for Schroon, one of those players was Ethan Tyrrell. Tyrrell had a career night, scoring 30 points including seven in overtime. Westport, which entered the game undefeated, led by as many as 15 points in the first half before a late Schroon surge cut the deficit to nine at half. The Wildcats opened the second half with a 16-5 to grab a lead and the battle was on. Westport had two chances to win the game at the end of regulation. A backcourt foul gave the Eagles a one-and-one with four seconds to play. The shot was missed and Westport was fouled again on the rebound with one second on the clock. Westport again missed the front end of the one-and-one. In the extra session Schroon Lake lost Kyle Bush, who tallied 19 points, and Dennis LeClair, who had eight points, to fouls. It didnt matter, though, thanks to Tyrrell. Trailing by a point, Tyrrell hit a three-pointer with a minute remaining and then nailed four straight free throws in the final seconds to ice the game. Plattsburgh 65, Ticonderoga 44 Plattsburgh downed Ticonderoga, 65-44. in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference boys basketball play Jan. 30. The Hornets, undefeated in CVAC action, jumped to a 19-8 lead and closed the game with a 19-9 run. Jesse Clark scored 13 points for Ti. Saranac 61, Moriah 41 Moriah fell to Saranac, 61-41, in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference boys basketball play Jan. 30. The teams had had the same number of field goals in the contest, but Saranac held a 27-9 edge at the free throw line. Hayden Whalen and Tyler Blaise each had nine points for Moriah. Moriah 68, Lake Placid 18 Moriah crushed Lake Placid, 68-18, in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference boys basketball play Feb. 4. The Vikings started the game with a 19-4 run and led 35-10 at the intermission. They started the second half with a 16-0 run. Nathan Gilbo scored 19 points and hauled down 12 caroms for Moriah. Hayden Whalen added 13 points for the winners. Westport 76, Crown Point 36 Crown Point fell to Westport, 76-36, in Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference boys basketball action Feb. 5. The Eagles jumped to an 18-7 lead and never looked back. Justin Potter tallied 10 points for Crown Point. Schroon Lake 62, Keene 39 Schroon Lake ripped Keene, 62-39, in Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference boys basketball action Feb. 5. Ethan Tyrrell scored 23 points for the Wildcats, who led all the way. Casey Jarrell added 13 points and Kyle Bush 11 for the winners.
