Polar Plunge set for New Year's Day

LAKE GEORGE - For those seeking to ring in the new year by shocking their system and doing likewise to spectators, the Lake George Winter Carnival Committee will be hosting the annual New Years Day Polar Polar Plunge on Jan. 1.

Registration for the event will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Duffy's Tavern on Amherst St. in Lake George and the plunge itself will take place at 2 p.m.

Annually, nearly 1,000 brave souls have dashed into the water for the event, which draws thousands of spectators to watch swimmers' skin turn red and listen to the shrieks of the rookie plungers.

"We just want to make sure that everyone brings a towel and some warm clothes for when they get out of the water," said Duffy's Tavern owner-operator Linda Duffy.

After the swim a party will be held with music, food and drinks. The Jonathan Newell Band will be taking the stage at Duffy's at 2:30 p.m., Duffy said.

There is no registration fee for 'the plunge', but a 'Polar Plunge' long sleeve t-shirt will be available to anyone who contributes a $5 donation, Duffy said.

The Polar Plunge has become a mainstay in the community and kicks off Duffy's Tavern's involvement in the month-long Lake George Winter Carnival which begins Jan. 26.
