Local voyagers to paddle Lake Champlain

Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center Administrator Neil Gruber, along with photographer and journalist Mike Cameron, will paddle across the entire length of Lake Champlain this summer in their kayaks-from May 1 to Labor Day-as part of the 2009 Samuel de Champlain Quadricentennial Celebration.

The kayakers will donate the proceeds from their project to Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center to fund a special excursion for residents on Lake Champlain in late summer and early fall.

In addition to celebrating the natural history and scenic beauty of Lake Champlain, in concert with the Quadricentennial, this event also will mark the tenth anniversary of the inaugural journey on the lake by nearly 100 HPHRC residents during the summer of 1999.

Since the trip was so popular among the residents and meaningful for the staff, the kayakers decided to raise up to $10,000 (and hopefully $15,000) to repeat the excursion for Porter residents. The funds they raise will be used for transportation for the residents to and from Charlotte, lunch on the boat, and of course for the rental of the boat to take the residents on this special daylong outing.

Starting this winter, one of the kayakers will be seeking pledges from Porter board members, physicians, staff members, resident families and other friends of Porter to support the feat.
