GLENS FALLS - Plattsburgh's local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 15-08 was one of two flotillas taking top honors at an awards ceremony Nov. 16 in Glens Falls. Flotilla 15-08 was named "Flotilla of the Year" for Division 15, which covers an area from the Canadian border to the Catskill Mountains. Normally, only one such award is given, but this year the Plattsburgh Flotilla shared the honor with the unit based in Schenectady.
Three officers of Flotilla 15-08 also received high awards. Flotilla commander Thomas Malone and division vice commander Margaret Malone, of Beekmantown; and Flotilla vice commander Frank Williams of Schuyler Falls, all received achievement medals from U. S. Coast Guard captain James McPherson, commander of Sector Northern New England. Malone also was named Auxiliarist of the Year by McPherson, represented by commander Michael Sams.
Plattsburgh's Flotilla 15-08 was officially chartered on May 3 of this year. Since then, the city of Plattsburgh has allowed them use of the boathouse at the old air base marina. Flotilla 15-08, an all-volunteer local unit, has done extensive renovations to the building and plans to use it as a operations/communications/training center in 2009.
At the awards ceremony, 15-08 was commended not only for the renovations and development of that building, but also for most-improved membership and member training program.
