Warrior girls remain undefeated

LAKE GEORGE - With a combination of tenacious defense, aggressive rebounding and a deep, talented roster, the Lake George Girls Basketball team remained undefeated this week in Adirondack League basketball action.

The Warrior girls played Hadley-Luzerne Dec. 17, followed by Whitehall two days later - a game they also won - then ran up against the larger and undefeated, Stillwater, which resulted in a non-league loss, the first defeat this season for the stellar Lake George team.

As of Monday, the Warriors were 5-1 for the season.

Shortly after beating Hadley-Luzerne 57-35, Coach Rob Tefft talked about the characteristics that have made Lake George so successful to this point in the 2008-09 season.

"Hadley-Luzerne played tough tonight, but our kids responded with intensity - the defense looked particularly good," he said. "We received great minutes from the kids off the bench."

A Warrior starter or two got into foul trouble, but players off the bench were rotated in to play, and kept up the momentum. Lake George led 14-9 in the first quarter, then hit their stride in the second as they adjusted to Hadley-Luzerne's scrappy defense. At halftime, Lake George led 28-14.

Hadley Luzerne pushed the ball up the floor well under the leadership of Eagle Senior Jesse Sussman, who with 19 points ended up as lead scorer for Hadley -Luzerne.

But Lake George's height, rebounding and depth proved too much for the Eagles.

Also, Lake George's aggressive defense forced poor shots from their opponents.

"Our kids are moving the ball around better - they're unselfish," Tefft said after the win. "They are coming along well as a group."

Tefft added that his players were working hard in practice, developing their play fundamentals.

Tefft had praise for senior Brittany Jones.

"Jones is leading by example," he said. "But everyone is contributing well."
