TICONDEROGA - The Ticonderoga Quiz Bowl team is having another strong season.
The Sentinels have a 4-1 record at the Post Star Academic Bowl in Queensbury after defeating Cornith in a 200-140 match on Dec. 3. It is currently in third place overall in the 24 team competition. Their final regular season match is scheduled for Jan. 14.
Scoring for the Sentinels this season are returning powerhouses David Mallon, Alex Walters and Ben Chapman and newcomer Adriana Clark.
Also playing for the Sentinels this year are Amber Perkins, Jared Best, Alex Durkota, David Cook, Anthony Contarino, Tory Walters, Christy Faucher, Alan Zhang and Andrew terSteege.
The Sentinels have expanded their play as well this year by attending the Dec. 5 PHAT II Quiz Bowl tournament at South Burlington High School. The Sentinels played two teams in the competition. They finished first in the small school division and ninth overall out of 28 teams. Dave Mallon and Alex Walters, the Sentinel captains this year, finished third and 13th individually out of the 102 students competing.
The Sentinel team has had great success in the past three years, including two visits to the National Academic Championship in Washington, D.C., in 2007 and 2008. They have already qualified for the 2009 national competition through both their playoff performance in last year's D.C. tournament as well as their small school win in PHAT II play.
The Sentinels are looking to power up their practice schedule and their fundraising to be ready for the challenging level of play they will face as they continue to compete this season at the local and the national level, according to adviser Deb Breitenbach.
