History Day gets corporate support

TICONDEROGA - Two local businesses have stepped forward to help Fort Ticonderoga host the North Country Regional Contest for National History Day.

Champlain National Bank and Ticonderoga Wal-Mart have made monetary gifts to help support the competition that will take place on Feb. 27.

Designed to encourage exploration and interpretation, History Day involves both teachers and students in the research-based contest. The theme of the 2009 national project is "The Individual in History" and students can present their entries in any of a number of mediums: papers, videos, websites and dramatic pieces, to name a few.

Teachers from around the region recently gathered at Fort Ticonderoga to learn more about History Day from New York State Coordinator Tobi Voight. Students from Clinton, Essex, Warren and Franklin counties can create and submit projects that will be judged at the fort. Winners will advance to the New York State competition in Cooperstown in May. The national finals are scheduled for College Park, Md., in June.

Information on this and other programs at the fort can be found at www.fortticonderoga.org
