WCS wrestlers tally wins early in season

WARRENSBURG - A team of wrestlers, primarily young and untested, has started off their season with some substantial success.

Warrensburg Central School's Varsity wrestling squad defeated Schuylerville Thursday, Dec. 4, then two days later placed third in the Saranac Early Bird tournament that included 11 teams from Vermont and Maine as well as across upstate New York.

In the tourney, three Burgher wrestlers were named champions of their weight classes - Abby Roth at 112, Cole Tennant at 145, and Logan Rock at 215.

Roth, a junior, was named Most Outstanding Wrestler for the entire day-long tournament after she beat a wrestler from Noble, Maine in the Semifinals, then in the Finals matchup defeated the No. 1 seed from Indian River, 3-2.

Burgher coach Mark Trapasso said he was extremely pleased with Roth's accomplishments, noting she was now in a weight class higher than last year, and was facing males with much more muscle mass.

"The jump up to 112 is huge - she's tangling with the men now," he said. "We're very pleased with her accomplishments so far this year."

The tournament win was a first for Cole Tennant, a junior. He was seeded fourth, but he pinned the No. 1 seed from Noble, Maine in the semifinals, then beat the wrestler rated No. 2 from Colchester, Vt., with a 3-1 score in the finals.

WCS senior Logan Rock, who successfully fought his way into the state tournaments the past two years, won his first invitational tournament Saturday. In years past, he's come in second in a half-dozen tournaments, coach Mark Trapasso said.

"This was a big win for Logan," he said.

Rock beat his opponent from Saranac 3-1 in the Early Bird tourney finals.

Also placing in the tournament were Burgher wrestlers freshman John Vaisey, third place, at 96 pounds; junior Donovan Santisteban, third place, at 119; junior Logan Winter, third, at 125; and senior Colin Campbell, second at 285, defeating a wrestler about 40 pounds heavier than he is.
