LAKE GEORGE - The Lake George High School girls basketball team has launched their 2008 season with two wins and solid performances from its players.
Dec. 5, senior Meagan Stover and sophomore Brittany Baker each scored 13 points, leading their team in a win over Adirondack League rival Hartford 54-38.
Coach Rob Tefft said the team has great prospects, because they continue to improve every day in practice.
"Our kids are playing well together, and our defense is working hard right now," he said. "Meagan Stover is doing quite well and we're getting good minutes out of the sophomores."
In the Hartford game, the Warriors overcame the hot hands of Tanager Kayla Casey - who hit four three-pointers - and teammate Miriam Nestle who matched her score at 12.
Adding crucial points for the Warriors were junior Sarah Anderson with 11, and senior Katie Flatley and sophomore Caroline Murphy had four apiece. Assisting were junior Maggie Miele sinking a three-pointer, sophomore Kelly Flaherty with one field goal, and senior Brittany Jones scoring a foul shot. Baker's 13 points included two three-point shots.
Lake George dominated the first quarter 14-2 and lead at the half 30-11, and maintained their lead despite a fourth quarter 16-10 surge by the Tanagers in the win over in Washington County.
In another road game, this one on Dec. 3, senior forwards Katie Flatley and Megan Stover lead their team in a 45-22 win over Spa Catholic, also on the road.
Flatley tallied 15 points and Stover scored 14 in this non-league game.
Assisting were Sarah Anderson with 8 points, while Brittany Baker,Brittany Jones and Maggie Miele and Sophomore Erin Blunt scored 2.
As of Tuesday, Lake George was scheduled to meet up with North Warren on Wednesday, Salem on Thursday and Stillwater Monday, followed by Hadley-Luzerne on Wednesday Dec. 17 and Whitehall Friday Dec. 19.
Tefft said he was anticipating that his team's winning streak will continue.
"We're off to a good start," he said.
