New life for an old home

INDIAN LAKE - One of the region's senior citizen affordable housing units is ready to start a new life.

On Nov. 1, Baldwin Real Estate of Rochester assumed management of the property on 48 White Birch Lane in Indian Lake under the authority of the USDA Rural Development Program (formerly the Farmer's Home Administration). The USDA will retain ownership of the housing facility but local management and its day to day operation has transferred to a Baldwin Realty satellite office in Schroon Lake.

The home features 16 complete living units primarily geared toward senior citizens and the legally disabled (regardless of age). Of the 16 units, only eight are currently occupied which contributed to the government's decision to overhaul its property management arrangements.

As part of the transfer, Baldwin is currently seeking qualified applicants for part-time office and maintenance staff. An extensive interior renovation of the vacant units is in process and this spring they plan to address the building's aesthetics with landscaping and exterior improvements.

Baldwin was approached by the USDA based on their success with similar North County properties.

Cheri Anderson of Schroon Lake serves as the Community Manager for Baldwin Real Estate. In addition to the property in Indian Lake, she also manages similar properties in Port Henry, Elizabethtown, and two in Schroon Lake.

"The interior renovations and putting some part time staff in place are the immediate top priorities," Anderson said. "Since assuming the property I have visited it several times and the consistent message that I get from residents is they consider themselves to be a family. It makes you feel good to know that they are there taking care of each other."

Each living unit features a bedroom, combination living and dining room, full bathroom, and kitchen - suitable for a single person or a husband and wife.
