Outdoor calendar of events

I have decided to quiet my keyboard this week so as to make room for this burgeoning calendar of outdoor related events. With the end of summer comes a multitude of outdoor activities and seasons, as this calendar reflects. Feel free to submit items youd like to see published on our outdoor page. You can do so by fax at 873-6360 or by e-mail to johng@denpubs.com. Monday, Aug. 18 - Wednesday, Oct. 1 Deer Management Permits go on sale. Permits must be applied for between these dates. Monday, Sept. 1 NEW YORK Gray, black and fox squirrel hunting begins and runs through Feb. 28. Daily bag limit is 6. Tuesday, Sept. 2 - Thursday, Sept. 25 LAKE CHAMPLAIN Canada Goose season begins in the Lake Champlain Fly Zone. Bag limit is five per day. Friday, Sept. 5 PORT HENRY First Friends of the NRA banquet at 5:30 p.m. at the K of C Hall. Great food, auctions, drawings and door prizes. Call Don Sage at 585-7250 or Tracy Hanchett at 532- 7953 for more information. Sunday, Sept. 7 SCHROON LAKE Annual chicken & lobster bake at the Schroon Lake Fish and Game Club beginning at noon. Open to all Members and Guests. $30 per person. Clam Chowder, Corn on the Cob, Half a Chicken, Salads, Rolls, Potatoes, Lobster, Roast Pig. Bring your own silverware. Saturday, Sept. 13 ADIRONDACKS Early black bear season opens and runs through Oct. 10. Last years license required when hunting prior to Oct. 1. Saturday - Sunday, Sept. 13 & 14 SCHROON LAKE Bow hunting course from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. both days at the Schroon Lake Fish and Game Club. To sign up contact: Don Sage at 585-7250. Bring your lunch both days. Thursday - Saturday, Sept. 18, 19 & 20 STONY CREEK A hunter education course will be held at Stony Creek Rod & Gun Club. Hours are 6 - 9 p.m. on Sept. 18 & 19 and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 20. The course is open to anyone 11 years or older. Pre-registration is required by calling Jim Carrion at 623-2502. Saturday - Sunday, Sept. 20 & 21 SCHROON LAKE Gun hunting course at the Schroon Lake Fish and Game Club from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. both days. To sign up contact Don Sage, 585-7250. Bring your lunch both days. Saturday, Sept. 20 LAKE GEORGE A bowhunter education training class will be held at Dunhams Bay Fish & Game Club on Sept. 20. This is a home study course and you must register by Sept. 5. The course is open to anyone 11 years and older. Participants must attend all sessions. Pre-registration is required. For pre-registration and class hours contact Peter Garvey at 745-5670 between 5-9 p.m. Ruffed Grouse season begins in the northern zone and runs through Feb. 28. Daily bag limit is four birds. Friday, Sept. 12 - Sunday, Sept. 14 TUPPER LAKE Hunter Education Class at the Tupper Lake Rod and Gun Club. Pre-registration required and attendees must complete all three days. Hours are 6-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Sunday. Call Sue at 725-6500. Sunday, Aug. 31 & Sunday, Sept. 21 PUTNAM Youth pheasant hunt shooter training beginning at 10 a.m. sporting clays shoot at the Putnam Fish & Game Club, Route 22, Putnam, NY. Drive south on Route 22 from Ticonderoga approximately 10 miles. Take the First Left Turn past Gull Bay Road. The club is approximately 1 mile on the right. Bring your own eye protection/safety glasses and hearing protection. The club has shotguns you may use for practice and hunting or you may bring your own. Pre-registration is required and applicants must complete all four days from 6 - 9 p.m, with the final day beginning at 9 a.m. Call Jim or Kathy at 523-2306. Tuesday, Sept. 16 - Thursday, Sept. 18 MORIAH Hunter Education Class at Moriah High School. Pre-registration is required and applicants must complete all three days from 6 - 10 p.m. Call Chuck at 546-8290 or Dennis at 942-6565. Wednesday, Sept. 17 & Wednesday, Sept. 24 SARATOGA Trapper Education Class at the 4-H Training Center in Saratoga. Pre-registration is required and applicants must complete both days from 5:30 - 10:30 p.m. Call 885 - 8995 to register. Saturday - Sunday, Sept. 27 & 28 PUTNAM Essex County League youth pheasant hunt. Locations include Mill Bay State Lands, Putnam Station Road in Putnam; Freedom Marsh State Lands, Hutton Square Road and Fort Ticonderoga property, north along Lake Champlain in Ticonderoga. Youth must have a valid New York State small game hunting license to hunt pheasant during the youth hunt. The age limit is 12 to 15 years old. Saturday - Sunday, Sept. 27 & 28 LAKE CHAMPLAIN Special youth hunting weekend for ducks and geese for ages 12-15 in the Lake Champlain Zone. Saturday, Oct. 4 - Tuesday, Oct. 14 ADIRONDACKS Regular season for hunting ducks in the Northeastern Zone. Overall bag limits are six a day. Saturday, Sept. 27 ADIRONDACKS Bowhunting begins in the northern zone and runs until Oct. 17. Last years license required when hunting prior to Oct. 1. Daily bag limit is 6. New license year begins in New York. Pheasant hunting season begins throughout much of New York and runs through Dec. 31. Daily bag limit is two birds. Fall Turkey Season begins throughout the Adirondacks and runs through Oct. 17. Season bag limit is one bird of either sex, except the limit is two birds in WMUs 6A, 6C, 6H and 6G. Saturday, Oct. 4 & Saturday, Oct. 11 LAKE GEORGE A hunter education class will be held at Lake George Town Hall. Applicants must attend both sessions from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m and pre-registration is required. Call Walt at 794-6170. Saturday, Oct. 11 ADIRONDACKS Regular muzzleloading season begins in the northern zone and runs from Oct. 11 through Oct. 17. WMUs 6A, 6C, 6H, 6G, 6K, 6F, 6J, 5A, 5C, 5F, 5H, 5G and 5J allow deer of either sex. Saturday, Oct. 11 & Sunday, Oct. 12 LAKE GEORGE A bow hunter education class will be held at Lake George Town Hall. Applicants must attend both sessions from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and pre-registration is required. Call Walt at 794-6170. Wednesday, Oct. 15 ADIRONDACKS Brook Trout season closes in most Adirondack waterways. Saturday, Oct. 25 NEW YORK The beaver trapping season begins in the Adirondacks and runs through March 31 in a majority of the northern WMUs. Otter season starts and runs through March 31, or April 15 depending on the WMU. Raccoon, red fox, gray fox, skunk, coyote, opposum and weasel trapping season opens and continues until Dec. 10 or Feb. 15, depending on the WMU. Mink & Muskrat trapping season begins in the Adirondacks and runs through April 15. Saturday, Oct. 18 ADIRONDACKS Regular season opens for whitetail deer in the northern zone and runs eight weekends until Sunday, Dec. 7. Saturday, Nov. 15 SOUTHERN ZONE Regular season opens in the southern zone and runs through Dec. 7. Monday, Dec. 8 ADIRONDACKS Late muzzleloading season begins and runs through Dec. 14 in WMUs 6A, 6C, 6H, 6G, 5G and 5J.
