Congressman visits Farmers Market

FAIR HAVEN U.S. Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) visited downtown Fair Haven and the Fair Haven Farmer's Market last week. His office was contacted by market manager Sherry Smith back in the spring; she was advised that he planned to make trips to local downtowns and several farmers markets. While walking downtown, Congressman Welch expressed is pleasure with the variety of products grown locally and available for the community. He mentioned how beautiful the Fair Haven park is as an important anchor for the community. Welch was updated by town officials about various town renovations underway including plans to refurbish the park. During the visit, the congressman took time to meet and speak with every market vendor. He learned that most of the Fair Haven vendors are full-time farmers and marketers of their farm produce. One vender told Welch that that in the current tough economy, several vendors had expanded their offering and took up non-farm related part-time jobs to make ends meet. Welch purchased a few fresh items from the vendors and purchased several 50/50 tickets that will benefit park improvements. The Fair Haven Farmer's Market greatly appreciated his stop to a small town on a low budget, Smith said. He could have very easily only visited area's with a larger population of voters. But instead he took out a hour to visit a group of hard working people in a smaller venue. For that we extend a large thank you to Mr. Welch and his staff.
