Meet the Candidates forum at Olive Ridley's this Tuesday

PLATTSBURGH The community will have the opportunity next week to meet with candidates for local office within Clinton County. The Champlain Valley Business & Professional Womens Club will host its third annual Meet the Candidates forum Tuesday, Aug. 26, at Olive Ridleys Restaurant on Court Street. The purpose of the forum will be for the public to meet one-on-one with local candidates for the November elections, said organization president Vicki Marking. Candidates of all local political races have been invited to participate in the event, with confirmations to date including Clinton County Family Court Judge candidates Timothy Lawliss and Bill Meconi, and Assemblywoman Janet L. Duprey. Duprey, who is running unopposed this year, will be one of the events keynote speakers. Its a presidential election year, but I dont want that to take the focus off some of these local elections, Marking said. Theyre still important, even though theres not a lot of them this year. The forum has also been opened to include participation of elected officials who are not running for office this November. The reason for their participation is for the public to learn more first-hand about issues of their concern. Even though theyre not running, its still a good opportunity to talk to some of our already elected officials to ask questions about what they should expect, whats going on currently and what are the big issues, Marking said. The date of the forum also holds historical significance, said Marking, as Aug. 26 also marks Womens Equality Day. The day recognizes the anniversary of the passage of 19th Amendment in 1920, giving women the right to vote. In recognition of this, the League of Women Voters will be in attendance handing out information and encouraging those who have not registered to vote, to do so. The forum, which will begin at 6:30 p.m., will include complimentary hors doeuvres. A cash bar will also be available. For more information, contact Marking at 563-5440 ext. 168, or Jennifer Meschinelli at 593-2780.
