Know nukes

To the editor: Predictably, the anti-Vermont Yankee crowd fails to bring out the real reason for the construction delays and the resulting massive cost overruns of those ill-fated power-plant projects: anti-nuclear activists determined to put enough obstacles in the construction process to kill the nuclear-power projects, not on factual grounds, but simply because these groups just did not like them. The facts are that in the two decades following their irresponsible acts, hundreds of nuclear power plants have been operating with admirable safety records here and abroad, producing much-needed electric power at competitive costs. However, largely as a result of those activists, we have not built new nuclear power plants in our country for more than 15 years, and we are now paying, literally, for the activists extremism.
