Downtown restaurants, businesses cater to artistic eyes

PLATTSBURGH City businesses were once again adorned with local works of art all in the name of bringing more culture to downtown. The Downtown Plattsburgh Summer Art Walk was held Aug. 9, with several locations on board for the event. Organizer Carol McLean said the Spring Art Walk in April was the event which started the series of seasonal art events. The idea was to get more traffic downtown and it was a good way for people to visit businesses they may never have been to before to see what the businesses and the artists are all about, said McLean. The Art Walk allowed those strolling downtown the opportunity to stop in to view pieces created by local artisans, said McLean. Her business, Irises Caf_nd Wine Bar, again participated in the event, featuring artist Monique Ford, a former student of the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. The mediums on exhibit ranged from paintings and photography to sculptures and jewelry. The event also included performances by local musicians. During the event, there was a chance to meet some of the artists and enjoy free refreshments. This is a great opportunity to support local artists, downtown and all the locally-owned and operated, independent businesses we have, said McLean. I think its important to support our businesses because we offer something different from chain stores and corporately-owned businesses. In addition to McLeans business, located at 22 City Hall Place, others that participated included the Kent-Delord House Museum, Lily Pond Gift Shop, North Country Food Co-op, The Smoked Pepper, North Country Cultural Center for the Arts, Plattsburgh Public Librarys Hale-Walter Gallery, Great Adirondack Soup Company, LivinGoods Restaurant, 87M Downtown Grill, Koffee Kat, and Geoffreys Pub.
