Annual regatta brings excitement to Westport

WESTPORT The 11th Annual Westport Challenge Regatta was held Sunday, August 3rd on Lake Champlain. Seventeen sailboats competed in three classes: A and B Classes handicapped using PHRF racing rules, and a J24 one-design class. Additionally, sailors from Camps Dudley and Pok-O-MacCready challenged each other using small one design sailboats with the Dudley team winning with 21 points to Pok-O-MacCreadys 15 points. In A Class, with two boats, Peter Brooks of Ballston Lake finished first and George Guy Lever of Wilmington finished second. In B Class, with eleven boats, Gary Hartwick of Lake Placid finished first, Iain Whitecross of Elizabethtown finished second, and Bob Vannier of Ticonderoga finished third. George Levers J35 was the first boat to cross the finish line of the four and a half mile course, while Gary Hartwicks Pearson 31 finished first overall on corrected time. For J24s in their class, Paul Reese of Westport and Rob Knippler of Middlebury, Vermont, tied for first and Stan Zakharin of Lake Placid finished third.
