Thank you for race support

To the editor: For the seventh year in a row, spectators looking north along Main Street in North Creek village were treated to the site of close to 300 runners hustling to the finish line for Race the Train, a benefit event for Dollars for Scholars. 100 volunteers of all ages coming together for a common cause provide for a quality race. Whether they are JCS students baking homemade treats for the runners, people in orange vests directing runners along the main street, someone handing a runner a cold cup of water along the race course, or a timer calling out the last word of encouragement at the finish line, we wish to thank each volunteer for the important work they do. Our Adirondack region truly is an area with a big heart63 area businesses contributed funds or services to make the race a success! Special thanks go to the following businesses who have been major sponsors for all 7 years of Race the Train: Barton Mines, Citizens Bank, Creative Stage Lighting, Friends Lake Inn, Lincoln Logs, National Grid, North Country Imports, OP Fredericks, Stewarts Shops, TC Murphy Lumber Company, The Town of Johnsburg, Upper Hudson River Railroad, and Upstate Insurance. Joining them as major sponsors this year were Alexander Funeral Home, Braley and Noxon Hardware, North Creek Woodworking, and TD Banknorth. We also wish to especially thank 3 sponsors who do a great job of getting the word out about the race. Denpublications provides a story and photo of the race in each of their regional publications. The Post Star offered several artistic ads, and Regional Radio made sure you could not dial into any of their 3 local channels without hearing about Race the Train for 2 weeks prior to the event. Special acknowledgements also go to the committee chairs and their crewmembers that collaborate to put on an event of this magnitude: John and Jerry Riegel- our generous hosts at the Upper Hudson River Railroad Cliff Welz- train coordinator Sam Allison- finish line Bob Sherwood- safety Heather Butler - timers and mile marking Candace Lomax and Wendy Sargent - raffle Stan Williford and Debbie Bedard- refreshments Linda Williford - baggage check Dottie Osterhout, Sarah Liebelt - water stations Nancy Quillinan - photography Robin Jay mailings, student volunteers Larry Blackhurst - sponsors Tami Sponable- registration table Gen May, Dan Olden results Mark Regan mailing labels, set up Active.com Steve Tomb bike safety Town of Johnsburg ambulance safety A very special thanks to Tracy Watson who puts in hours of time planning the Family Fun Run which follows the main event and brings joy to young children who are often running their very first race. Thanks also to Dan Olden who always does a very professional job of calculating and posting all race results. Dave and Dottie Harrington also travel each year from Queensbury to personally cheer on each runner as they complete their challenging 8.4-mile run. Finally, our hats off to the superb effort of the Warren County Sheriffs Department; they insured safe running conditions for all the racers. You could hear them call out good-natured encouragement to the runners while they provided safety for all. We very sincerely thank one and all and invite you to join us again on Aug. 1, 2009 for our 8th annual Race the Train. Ann Arsenault, Jill Pederson, Gary Wilson, 2008 Race the Train Co-Directors
