White Water Derby returns to region

NORTH CREEK The 51st annual Hudson River Whitewater Derby will be held May 3-4. Events start Saturday in North River, with a Novice Slalom at 11 a.m. Immediately after the novice kick-off, a Giant Slalom race will be hosted, followed by the legendary Chuck Severance Race. Spectators are invited to watch the race from the banks of the Hudson River and sample some local fare offered by area food vendors. An awards ceremony and reception is slated for Saturday afternoon, at Tannery Pond Community Center, in North Creek. On Sunday, the action moves to North Creek at 11 a.m. with the official Whitewater Derby Race. Competitors will start the race from the put-in at North Creek Railroad Depot Station, and race the eight miles of scenic river to Riparius Bridge. The Upper Hudson River Railroad will be operating on Sunday, allowing enthusiasts to ride the rails in comfort while watching the race from the best vantage point imaginable. An awards ceremony and reception will conclude the weekend event at Riverside Station Park, with live bluegrass music provided by The Dont Quit Your Day Jobbers! The Hudson River Whitewater Derby welcomes racers and spectators to enjoy this two-day celebration that combines an appreciation of the region, its history, and an exciting competitive sport.
