Goshen fire burns 2 acres

BRANDON An illegal grass burn on April 20 spread to char approximately two acres at the Goshen residence of William Mathis on Flora White Road near the Blueberry Hill cross-country ski area. Members of the Brandon Fire Department responded to the fire. Working from two trucks, firefighters spent between 30-45 minutes battling the fire. According to Goshen Fire Warden Norman Reed, Mathis was burning grass and brush without a permit. Winds may have played a factor. Reeds report on the cause of the blaze will be filed this week. He said it was likely Mathis will be fined by the Brandon Fire Department; he also noted that the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation was interested in the case. Another illegal burning incident took place at the Mathis residence in 2007, according to sources.
