Community support sought to beautify town

MOOERS The Mooers Beautification Committee is looking for a few good volunteers. The group of local community-minded residents is preparing to tackle various projects as part of a townwide clean-up day scheduled for Saturday, May 10. Committee members Scarlett Sample and Ann Hobson said the committee is seeking help planting flowers, replacing worn out banners and flags and clearing winter debris. While projects will vary in size and the amount of time they will entail, both women noted people may contribute as little or as much as they can. There is also no set schedule for people to adhere to, leaving the day wide open for people to do their part. We could always use volunteers, but all people really have to do is clean up their yards and maybe plant some flowers, said Sample. It really doesnt take much. Residents can also help by simply watering flowers that will be placed in roadside planters, she added. In addition to the clean-up day, the committee also has plans to erect four to five secondary road signs which would read Welcome to Mooers, similar to one already seen upon entering the town on State Route 22. Sample and Hobson said they also have a few wish list items, though they admit the actual cost of some are beyond their annual budget, which is currently $3,000. In a perfect world, Hobson said, she would like to see the riverfront developed into a park, complete with picnic tables, benches and a gazebo. Sample said she would like to see a skateboard park constructed to give kids a safe place specifically designated for riding their skateboards. Both said they would even like to see an attractive clock erected downtown and a community pool established. We have big dreams, Hobson said, turning to Sample. Dont we? We sure do. Weve got a lot of good ideas, Sample said. All we need to do is win the lottery, Hobson said with a laugh. Those interested in helping the Mooers Beautification Committee or who have suggestions for the committee may contact Sample at 236-7759 or Hobson at 236-5996. Donations to further the work of the committee may be mailed to the town of Mooers, 2508 U.S. Route 11, Mooers N.Y. 12958. The committees next meeting will be held at the Mooers Volunteer Fire Department, 2508 U.S. Route 11, Wednesday, May 7, beginning at 7 p.m.
