Ticonderoga area youths killed in car accident

PUTNAM A pair of teen-age women died as the result of a car accident April 21 in Putnam. Three teen-age boys were also injured in the crash on Route 22 near Putnam Center Road at 2:15 a.m. Michaella K. Lopes, 16, of Enosburg Falls, Vt., was pronounced dead at the crash scene, according to the Washington County Sheriffs Department. A passenger in the car, Lopes was ejected as the car flipped, police said. Shannon James, 16, of Ticonderoga, suffered a head injury and was airlifted to at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt., where she later died. The driver, Dustin T. St. Andrews, 16, of Putnam, had a compound fracture to a wrist and was also taken to Fletcher Allen Health Care. Two other passengers, Bryant R. Austin, 16, of Ticonderoga, and Kristopher S. Wilson, 17, of Putnam, suffered minor injuries and were treated at Glens Falls Hospital. The group was believed to be coming from a party and was headed north when the car went off the road at the end of a curve, straddling a guidewire before it flipped several times, police said. Police believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. Police said beer was found in the car. The investigation is continuing and charges are likely, police said. It appeared that neither of the girls was wearing a seat belt, police said, but at least one of the boys was.
