Westport students reach across globe with pen pal program

WESTPORT Even in the age of email, the art of letter writing is still an important part of Westport Central Schools education. Members of Susan Satloffs fifth grade enrichment class have been writing to pen pals through the World Pen Pal Organization. They each chose a country they wanted to study, and along with researching facts and information about their country, theyve been writing to a pen pal, explained Satloff. Satloff said the program was a useful communication skill, with students focusing on writing. Students have sent two long letters and three postcards. Keragan Viens, a student, received a reply from her pen pal in France. She said the letter described family life, school and included a picture. It was really exciting because its so cool that Im getting to speak to someone so far away, said Viens. Viens said she liked the program because she was helping someone else learn how to speak English. The experience can be frustrating, said Satloff, since some of the pen pals havent responded. Sydney Mitchell, who wrote to the Spain, is still waiting for a response. Im kind of sad. I havent gotten anything back, but Im excited to hear from her, said Mitchell.
