Schroon citizen sought

SCHROON LAKE The Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce is seeking its 2008 citizen/organization of the year. Established in 1976, the award honors an area resident or organization who has made a significant and sustained contribution to the quality of life in Schroon Lake. The chamber will honor the person or organization at its annual dinner in June. Nominations can be made by writing a letter to the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce, PO Box 726, Schroon Lake 12870. All nominations must be received by May 13. Call the chamber office at 532-7675 for more information. The chamber board of directors will select the citizen/organization of the year and will announce the winner in May. Do you know a person/organization who should be recognized for being an outstanding citizen/organization?, asked Rosemarie Ritson of the chamber. If so, the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce wants to know about it. If you would like to nominate someone for 2007, you must write a letter to the chamber of commerce, she said. Your nomination letter should include the accomplishments for which this person or organization should be honored. Details of the achievements, volunteer endeavors, personal characteristics, community support and efforts toward quality of life improvements will be considered. The nominee need not be a chamber of commerce member, but must reside in the town of Schroon, North Hudson, Paradox or Severance. The 2007 citizen of the year was Lorraine Erikson. Erikson and her husband, Tom, purchased property in Schroon Lake in 1985 as a summer camp. They moved to Schroon full-time in 1995. She has been active in the Schroon Lake Senior Citizens Club, the Community Church, the Schroon Lake Fish & Game Club, the Schroon Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and the Schroon Lake Association since arriving. Erikson is best known for her work with the local senior citizens club. She has served two terms as president and been elected secretary and vice president as well as a member of the board of directors. In 2003 she started the clubs annual Garage Sale in the Park and is the editor of the groups monthly newsletter. She was named Senior Citizen of the Year in 2000. In 2005 she received a lifetime certificate and gold pin from the Essex County Retired Senior Volunteer Program. In 2004 Erikson was given the Robert J. Uplinger Distinguished Service Award by the Schroon Lake Lions Club.
