Potential abduction attempt thwarted, police say

PLATTSBURGH A town of Plattsburgh man has been taken into custody for allegedly attempting to abduct an 8-year-old girl. Brian R. Krawczyk, 32, was arrested by city police Thursday night on the misdemeanor charge of endangering the welfare of a child. According to Plattsburgh Police Department Capt. Mike Branch, Krawczyk attempted to coax the girl out of Pizza Bono, a restaurant at the corner of Margaret and Clinton streets shortly before 7 p.m. A department report stated officers were told a man and his daughter were eating dinner at the restaurant, when the father stepped out to make a phone call. While he was gone, Krawczyk allegedly approached the girl and tried to talk her into leaving with him. Some witnesses said they saw him acting strangely, talking in a loud voice, said Branch. Gil Borden, a cook at Pizza Bono, said he wasnt working the night of the incident, but was outside the restaurant where he witnessed the man talking to the girl. I saw the whole thing happen, said Borden. He was trying to get this little girl to go for a ride with him. The girl then began to become visibly upset, said Borden, drawing attention to the incident. Borden and restaurant employees realized there was a problem and intervened, staying with the girl until police arrived. I was [at the restaurant] earlier and he was outside just talking to himself, Borden recalled about Krawczyk. So, I just figured he was talking to himself again. Im not a professional, but I think there was obviously something wrong with him, he added. Branch reported the girl was uninjured and Krawczyk cooperated with arresting officers upon being taken into custody. Krawczyk was arraigned in Plattsburgh City Court before the Hon. Penelope D. Clute. He was remanded to Clinton County Jail on $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 cash bond. As of Friday morning, Krawczyk was still in county jail. City police are working with the county offices of Child Protective Services and the District Attorney to further investigate the matter and determine if further changes are pending. The name of the girl nor her family will be released, Branch said.
