Spartan baseball team starts regular season play

Dan Conley (Manchester, N.H.) has been named the North Atlantic Conference baseball rookie of the month. Conley batted .389 (7-for-18) with a homerun and triple in a 4-1 week for the CSC Spartans. Conley had 12 RBI, scored six and stole three bases in three attempts. The freshman outfielder also had four assists, fielding his position flawlessly on the week. It is the second-consecutive week Conley has earned a conference honor. The freshman was named Player of the Week. Conley currently leads the Spartans in hitting at .377 with two doubles, four triples and one homerun. Back in February, Castleton was chosen as the college baseball preseason favorite of the North Atlantic Conference in a vote conducted by the leagues coaches. The Spartans, who finished last season atop the NAC standings, received four first place votes and a total of 33 points in the NAC baseball preseason poll. Castleton will need to replace the loss of 7 starters and will rely on second-team all conference pitcher Jeremy Gilcris and a trio of seniors to lead a young team. Husson College, which finished 2007 with a 7-5 in conference play and defeated Castleton twice in the tournament before falling to eventual champion St. Josephs (Maine), returns five starters including junior outfielder Jeff Miller a second-team all-conference selection a season ago. The Eagles received two first place votes.
