MIDDLEBURY Firefighters responded to a fire at the Marquis Movie Theatre on Main Street in downtown Middlebury April 8. Crews attempted to cut a hole in the roof to battle the flames. The street was blocked off as crews fought the noontime fire. One firefighter suffered from smoke inhalation. The Marquis Theatre is a popular destination for Middlebury College students. It is the only cinema in town and has been a showcase for first and second-run films since the 1960s. According to an eyewitness, it is unlikely there were moviegoers in the theater at the time of the fire; matinee screenings are not shown on weekdays.
