ORDA to host U.S. Junior Championships

LAKE PLACID Call it a preview for future installments of Stars on Ice. The nations best and brightest young figure skaters will convene in Lake Placid next winter for the 2009 Junior Figure Skating Championships, slated to take place from December 8 to 13 at the Olympic Center. According to Dennis Allen, the Olympic Centers general manager, the annual competition crowns the U.S. champion in ladies, mens and pairs skating. Next Decembers event will feature competitors from the first two levels of the U.S. Figure Skating competitive structure juvenile and intermediate. Were very excited to have this caliber of figure skaters in this building and look forward to this phenomenal event, said Allen. This will be a great way to start our holiday season in town, right on the heels of Stars on Ice. To qualify for the national championships, skaters must turn in a top four performance at one of nine regional championships held nation-wide. Those regionals are scheduled for Fall 2008. Evan Lysacek won back-to-back Junior Championships in 1998 and 1999, and later claimed two bronze medals at the World Championships. Other alumni of the competition include silver medalist ice dancers Meryl Davis and Charlie White. Next winters event will take place on the ice at both the 1980 rink and the 1932 rink. The championships should bolster an already thriving winter economy in Lake Placid. In early November, ORDA will host the Four Nations Tournament, featuring some of the worlds top womens hockey teams. Canada, Finland, and Sweden are expected to face off against the U.S. Womens Select team. This weekend at the Olypmic Center, some of the countrys best adult skaters are showcasing their skills at the U.S. National Figure Skating Championships.
