Woodmen ceremony honors those lost in Sept. 11 attacks, pays homage to local heroes

PLATTSBURGH Woodmen of the World Lodge 462 recently conducted its annual community ceremony to remember victims and heroes of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The ceremony, called "In Honor and Remembrance Woodmen Salutes Americas Heroes," was held at the Woodmen Insurance Office on Riley Avenue and included a salute to "hometown heroes." Police officers, firefighters and members of the Armed Forces were honored for their bravery and dedication which helps safeguard local communities every day.

Two local state troopers were honored at the ceremony. Troopers Christopher Gonyo and Christopher Dumas saved three lives from a burning building in Chazy Dec. 2, 2006. The men were both awarded the Woodmen Lifesaver Commendation Plaque. Trooper Gonyo was on hand to receive the award.

Woodmen of the World, founded in 1890, is a fraternal benefit organization offering insurance protection, financial security and fraternal benefits. Nearly 800,000 members across the country share a commitment to family, community and country.

This is the sixth year Woodmen of the World has sponsored the In Honor and Remembrance project.
