SUV crash kills couple in Crown Point

CROWN POINT A driver and his passenger died when their sport-utility vehicle overturned on Route 9N near Sugar Hill Road in Crown Point Sept. 25.

Dead are driver Audrey M. Chancer, 76, of San Diego, Calif., and passenger Walter K. Cohen, 77, of 32 Skylark Lane, Schroon Lake.

Police said Chancer was driving south near the former Spaulding snack bar when she lost control of her Lexus sport-utility vehicle about 6:20 p.m.

The SUV crossed through the north lane and went off the road on the east side, rolling down a steep embankment and striking trees.

Cohen was pronounced dead at the crash site.

Chancer was taken to Moses-Ludington Hospital in Ticonderoga and then transferred to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, where she died.

Cohens wife, Doris Cohen, 77, of the same address, was a passenger in the car. She was treated for minor injuries at Moses-Ludington and released.

Chancer was a friend of the Cohens visiting from California. They had all gone out for dinner and were returning to Schroon Lake when the crash occurred.

State police from Schroon Lake investigated, with Crown Point Fire Department at the accident site and Port Henry firefighters on standby at Crown Points station.
