Cancer awareness programs slated

TICONDEROGA Inter-Lakes Health in Ticonderoga is observing Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women in the U.S., second only to lung cancer, according to Heather Mattison of ILH. The chance of developing breast cancer in a womens life is approximately 1 in 8. This year alone it is estimated that 178,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the U.S. (American Cancer Society 2006).

Having a yearly mammogram can lead to early detection, Mattison said. This often gives greater treatment options and can save lives.

Women should have annual mammogram screenings starting at age 40, Mattison said. Earlier screenings may be necessary based upon your family history.

Inter-Lakes Health will have a drawing every Friday for the month of October. Those patients who had a mammogram at Moses-Ludington Hospital in the past year will be included. Choice of prizes will include a fleece blanket or a travel mug.

To set up an appointment for a mammogram call the radiology department at 585-3758. Appointments are available Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Mattison noted some women may be eligible for a free breast cancer screening through the Essex County Healthy Living Partnership. Call 1-877-275-6266 for information.
