HINESBURG -- The CVU Redhawks football squad (3-1) added another win to their record last Saturday in a 27-20 victory over Poultney in Vermont Division III High School Football action.
The victory was highlighted by a pair of outstanding plays by senior wide receiver and defensive back Mark Talley.
Talley found the end zone on a seventy-seven-yard kickoff return and again on a forty-two-yard interception return with less than three minutes left to lift the Redhawks by a touchdown.
Poultney struck first late in the opening quarter with a two-yard run by Kenny Ross. CVU matched Poultneys touchdown late in the first half off another two-yard run by running back Jake Nealey.
The back-and-forth continued after John Fairbanks returned the ball to the CVU thirty-one yard line, setting up a short and goal run for Ryan Davenport, putting Poultney up 14-6 with the first half winding down.
With less than two minutes left, Talley pinned the Blue Devils inside of their fifteen yard line, setting up the Redhawks defense to force a fumble that led to a two-yard dash by running back Tommy Powers and a successful two-point conversion as quarterback Derek Liebert hooked up with Talley to tie the game.
The game was locked up at 14 all for most of the third quarter, but Ross found the end zone again after breaking a twenty-yard run.
On the very next play Poultneys kickoff went short and Talley capitalized, taking the ball seventy-seven yards to the house.
CVU scored the winning touchdown on Talleys interception return, and their defense -- aided by windy conditions -- closed out the game by forcing Poultneys passing game to go only one for eight.
This week, CVU heads to New York to battle Warrensburg on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m.
