Minutemen win third straight game

The Mill River Minutemen football team extended their winning streak to three games last Saturday afternoon when they defeated the previously unbeaten Springfield Cosmos 28 - 6 at home.

The game began like the visiting Cosmos, who averaged 47 points in their first three games, were accustomed to. On Springfields second possession they marched the ball 85 yards in 12 plays, with Steve Miller taking it in from one yard out giving the Cosmos an early lead.

But that drive would be Springfields lone moment of glory in this one. Mill Rivers defense, led by Cody Peterson, would completely shut down the Cosmos offense the rest of the way. Meanwhile the Minutemen offense, behind quarterback Connor Burke, would score four unanswered touchdowns to secure the huge win.

Burke completed four of his seven pass attempts for 124 yards and three touchdowns. Two of those touchdown passes were to Preston Kinney who caught scoring strikes of 46 and 13 yards. Burke also teamed up with Drew Poalimo from 15 yards out. Allen White led the ground attack for the victorious Minutemen, carrying the ball nine times for 146 yards, including a 75 yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Pat Benini was effective as well gaining 92 yards on 17 carries.

Both clubs stood at 3 - 1 following the Mill River win. The Minutemen will try to make it four in a row this Saturday when they travel to Poultney to take on the Blue Devils. Kickoff is Scheduled for noon.

The Otter Valley Otters were hoping to make it three in a row themselves when they traveled to Bellows Falls last Saturday to take on the Terriers. But they fell behind 16 - 0 and couldnt recover, bowing to the Terriers 22 - 15. Otter quarterback Ross Jakubowski completed five of his ten pass attempts for eighty yards, including a twenty-seven yard touchdown pass to Justin Lertola in the fourth quarter. Eric Becker, who had an eighty-three yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the second quarter, carried the ball nine times for 35 yards. Both teams stood at 2 - 2 following the Bellows Falls victory. The Otters host the Fair Haven Slaters this Saturday at their homecoming weekend.
