Tigers take on Raiders; RHS handed first defeat by MUHS

Things started well for the Eagles who drove the field and scored on their first possession of the game, with Casey Senecal finishing it off with a fourteen yard run. Senecal would end the game with eighty-one yards rushing and Mount Abraham wouldnt find the end zone again.Springfield improved to 3 - 0 while the Eagles fell to 0 - 2. Mount Abe will still be seeking their first win this Saturday when they host Winooski. Kick-off is at 2:00 PM.

SoccerThe Middlebury Tigers were shutout in the first round of the Rutland Boys Soccer Tournament 3 - 0 last Saturday on a wet field in Rutland. Minuteman goalie Austin Bicskei made seven saves to preserve the shutout against the Tigers.

The Mount Abraham Eagles boys soccer team posted an exciting 1 - 0 win in Swanton over the winless Missisquoi Thunderbirds. After the two teams battled for thirty-seven scoreless minutes before the Eagles Ben Jacobs took advantage of a penalty kick and blasted the ball past Thunderbird goalie Cody McWilliams for the games lone score. Mount Abraham goalie Jonathan Martin made nine saves to earn the shutout, while McWilliams blocked ten shots for the Thunderbirds. Missisquoi fell to 0 - 5 with the loss.

The Vergennes Commodores were in action last Friday too. They hosted the Springfield Cosmos and the two teams battled to a scoreless tie. This one could just have easily been a Commodore loss. Springfield controlled the second half, and most of it was played in front of the Commodores net, but Vergennes goalie Joe Chugg came up with a huge performance stopped seven shots to preserve the tie. The tie put the Commodores at 1 -1 - 2 on the year, while Springfield went to 2 - 1 -1.

Field hockeyIn local high school field hockey action last Saturday in Jericho the Eagles squeaked out a 2 - 1 win over the Mount Mansfield Cougars. The Eagles drew first blood in the contest when Amelia Norris fed Shannon Jipner who converted the feed into the games first goal. The Cougars tied it early in the second half when Lorelei Phillips, assisted by Meagan Oliver, beat Tiger goalie Gillian Comito for the Cougars lone goal. The score remained tied until there was just a little over two minutes left to play in the game. That is when Melanie Acker played hero by blasting the ball past Cougar goalie Caitlin Thornton for the game winner. Comito wound up with four saves for the 3 - 1 - 1 Eagles, and Thornton matched her for the 1 - 5 Cougars.
