Santor honored for lifetime of service

KEESEVILLE At 82, Carman Santor maintains a busy schedule, dominated by his volunteer activities.

Santor, a lifelong resident of Keeseville, served in the Marines during World War II, mostly in the reserves. While in the service, he earned a degree from Muhlenberg College, which set him on his path as a lifelong social worker. Earlier this year, the Clinton County Bar Association presented Santor with the 2007 Liberty Bell Award for his years of dedication to community and youth-oriented volunteer work. For Santor, the award was an affirmation of his efforts.

I was overwhelmed I feel obligated to continue to deserve the recognition, said Santor.

Santor was employed by the Clinton County Probation Department for over 40 years and retired as director of probation. He has been a licensed certified social worker since 1964 and a licensed master social worker since 2004.

Santors list of volunteer activities include working with the Clinton County Youth Board for 25 years, the Clinton County Youth Court for 10 years, the Essex County Youth Board for 25 years, the Dannemora Prison Advisory Board for 20 years, the Clinton County Mental Health Board for 30 years, the Surrogate Decision Making Committee, by state appointment, for 10 years, and as student mentor at AuSable Valley Central School for 10 years, a member of the Joint Council for Economic Opportunity for 4 years, the Elks Club Youth Activities for 20 years and the Keeseville Youth Commission for 30 years.

Santor described his current work with JCEO as one of the most rewarding parts of his career. Despite his retirement, Santor has no plans to stop his volunteer work.

I could fish and hunt, but I find such job satisfaction in reaching out and helping that are asking for help, said Santor. He explained he believed firmly in helping others to help themselves.

Santor has taught over 100 college-level classes between 1965-2000 as an adjutant professor. He led courses in criminal justice and social work at Clinton Community College, SUNY Plattsburgh and Clinton Correctional Facility.

Santor is also a member of the Keeseville Knights of Columbus and the Keeseville BPOE.

He was married to the former Peg McCusker for 40 years, until her death in 1996. He has 6 children and 7 grandchildren.
