Local sugarmakers make maple candy

Two Addison County sugarmakers are part of the large maple sugarhouse business in the Vermont Building at Eastern States Exposition in Massachusetts. The fair runs through Sept. 30.

Gerry Masterson, of Lincoln, and Brad Hutchins, of Panton, are making fresh maple candy during the agricultural expo. The maple cooks and candy makers at the Big E make several tons of maple candy and cream during the fair.

Other maple products produced at the Big E include more than a ton of maple cotton candy.

About 50 volunteers and employees staff the sugarhouse that annual has more than 800,000 visitors during the fair. Funds raised at the sugarhouse go to support the work of the Vermont Sugar Maker's Association.

Addison County is well represented at the fair with Sheila Masterson, of Lincoln, and Larry Myott, of Ferrisburgh, serving as co-managers of the facility.
