Burger meat not a problem

Last weeks statewide news reports about Shaw's Supermarkets recalling tainted hamburger meat in Vermont and New Hampshire require a clarification. According to Judy Chong, a Shaws spokeswoman in West Bridgewater, MA, store brand packages marked "EST 492"which health officials had said contained deadly Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteriawere pulled prior to shipment to any Shaws stores located in Vermont.

Wire reports, including the report in last weeks Eagle, implied that the meat had been placed in Shaws stores and sold. The tainted meat never reached store shelves.
