HINESBURG -- The CVU Boys varsity football team was handed its first loss of the season last Friday in a 13-12 loss to Winoo-ski High School. Winooski racked up its first win with Friday nights home victory.
The Winooski Spartans overwhelmed the Redhawks' offense for most of the game, holding them to 6 points through three quarters and well into the final period. With less than 3 minutes left in the game, the Spartans looked to have the game locked up after a 27-yard touchdown run by running back Travis Rock.
On their next possession, however, CVU quarterback Derek Liebert connected with wide-out Mark Talley for a 51-yard touchdown pass with 48 ticks left on the clock. Redhawks coach Charlie Burnett was left with no choice other than to attempt a 2-point conversion, and he looked to running back Tommy Powers to do the job. However, it was Rock, who scored the game winning touchdown on offense, who made the game sealing play on defense, stuffing Powers short of the conversion.
Jake Nealy scored on a 5-yard run in the 1st quarter to open up scoring, but CVU failed to convert on the extra point attempt. Spartans quarterback D.J. Campbell threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Chris Blais in the 2nd quarter and Winooski's extra point attempt was successful to give them a 7-6 lead.
In other CVU sports action the field hockey team moved to 2-2-2 after a close match with Middlebury last week. Emmaleigh Loyer tallied the lone goal for the Redhawks off an assist from Meghan Winget.
Shelby Laframboise scored in the second half for Middlebury (2-1-2) to knot the score at 1-1, the assist going to Lindsay Lalonde.
Jocelyn Stowell was in the net for CVU and made an outstanding 22 saves.
