Smith returns as Westport library director

WESTPORT The Westport Library has hired Stephen Smith as its new director. This is a homecoming for Stephen who from 1988 to 1995 worked as Westports Library Assistant and then Library Director before moving to Oregon for three years. I am so pleased to return, Smith said. I had a wonderful experience at the Westport Library the first time around and can hardly wait to get involved again. It is such a good library and I look forward to working with everybody to make it even better. Jack Buttimer, president of the Westport Library Board said, We are so fortunate to get someone with Stephens expertise. He already knows the collection and how things work. He gained additional library experience working as an assistant librarian in Portland. People in the community are happy to see Stephen return. Smith is a native of Australia where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Art Degree at Preston Institute of Technology, Melbourne, Australia. He moved to upstate New York in 1988 and now lives in Willsboro with his wife, Mary Mead. He has continued his artistic career working as a free-lance artist and illustrator. Stephen began work on Sept. 4 and has already renewed acquaintances and introduced himself to new patrons. Things have changed while I was gone," he said, "yet there is a lot that is still the same. The board has become more engaged and I am excited to work with them to advance the new Five-Year Plan. Board member, Cynthia Schira said, We have found someone who is friendly, community-oriented, and technically proficient to work with the full array of today and tomorrows informational resources. The library is a great asset to Westport and with Stephen, we can continue the high-quality service that people have come to expect from our library.
