QUEENSBURY Letters are being sent to property owners throughout the state about the 2007 Middle Class STAR Rebate program, and recipients should pay attention in order to get a rebate check.
The new Middle Class STAR Rebate program is available to homeowners who receive the basic STAR exemption on their property tax bill. An application must be filed, since the new rebate is based on income. Letters have been, and continue to be sent to eligible property owners since July and through the end of September.
New York State property owners outside of New York City who have an income of $90,000 or less are eligible for the rebate. Property owners who are over 65 and get the enhanced STAR rebate will receive their checks automatically this summer. Enhanced STAR recipients do not need to fill out an application.
The deadline is Nov. 30, 2007 for applications for the new STAR rebate check. Applications received after that date will not receive a rebate check.
Once a homeowner receives the letter from the state Department of Taxation and Finance, they can apply in one of two ways. The tax departments Web site, nystax.gov, has the information and application available and is safe, fast and secure. Otherwise, the application will be included with the letter or can be printed from the Web site or obtained from your local assessors office to mail.
Each letter will have a code necessary for the application process. Anyone who doesnt receive a letter by the end of September should call the tax department at 1-877-678-2769. According to the tax departments Web site, Warren County property owner letters were mailed on Sept. 3.
