Moriah to sell building; close another

PORT HENRY The town of Moriah has decided to sell the former Mineville Health Center building and close the old Republic Steel building.

Trustees voted to put the former health center, located on Hospital Road in Mineville, up for sale during their Sept. 11 meeting. Before the building can be sold, the town must hold a public hearing. No date has been set for the hearing.

The building was home to the Mineville Health Center for years, but in 2003 the state Department of Health ruled the aging building was unfit for a medical facility. As a stop-gap measure, the health center was moved to the adjacent Moriah Community Building the former Republic Steel building leaving the one-time hospital vacant.

A new $1.2 million health center is now under construction at the Moriah Industrial Park on Plank Road.

When the new building is ready, late this year, Moriah officials plan to close the old Republic Steel building.

That building costs us almost $20,000 a year just in heat and lights, Moriah Supervisor Tom Scozzafava said.

The old Republic Steel building is actually owned by Essex County, although it has been utilized by the town of Moriah the past 15 years. It has served as a home to town board meetings as well as a North Country Community College branch, Literacy Volunteers of America office, High Peaks Hospice office and community events.

Now, however, it serves only as home to health center which will move soon and to Ex-Earth, a company that holds the mineral rights to the former Republic Steel property.

We only have one rent-paying tenant, Scozzafava said. It doesnt make sense economically to keep the building open.

Scozzafava said he believes the old Republic Steel building will be used by Essex County for records storage.

Our hope is the county will take care of it and keep it up, the supervisor said. Its an important building to the community.
