Johnsburg Fish & Game hosts Open House

JOHNSBURG The Johnsburg Fish & Game Club held an Open House and Turkey Shoot on Saturday, Sept. 8, at their Oven Mountain Road property.

Founded in 1930 as a sporting club promoting outdoor recreation and the shooting sports, the club gained notoriety in 1958 as the founding organization for the Hudson River White Water Derby. With the intent of promoting the Adirondack region through increased use of the Hudson River, the club retained organization and sponsorship of the event until 1978. The club continues to support their programs through the annual sale of the highly coveted Derby buttons.

In an effort to update their facilities and attract new members, the club recently undertook an initiative to replace its aging shooting bench and shelter with a newly constructed building. As part of the days official events, the new building was dedicated to Town of Johnsburg resi- dents and long-standing members, Roger and Claudette Jones. The couple was honored for dedicated service to the organization spanning over 4 decades.

Im not sure why everybody is making a fuss over me, Jones said. Some of the people who really deserve credit for the new building are Shawn Warrington, Jack Batha and Ben Gadway. They all put a lot of work into it, and we all hope to attract new members because of it.

In addition to its annual dues, and profits received through derby button sales, the not-for-profit organization recently received application acceptance for funding provided through Town of Johnsburg Bed Tax revenue. The funding will be applied toward their ever-increasing operating expenses, with any excess earmarked for future club improvements.

Weve also been working on securing grant money through Senator Littles office, Jones said. Theres federal money being dispersed through the states to support youth sports and outdoor recreation.

With the potential grant funding, the club hopes to implement such enhancements as a covered handgun range, continued clubhouse improvements, and upgrades to their trap and skeet range.
