An Athens, Vt., family will have a new home, new hope and a new start thanks to a Brandon construction company and a popular ABC-TV program.
The McKernon Group will begin construction on a new home for the Vitale family, as part of the ABC program Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The McKernon Group is managing the entire construction project which is to be filmed and completed in just four days.
This family has gone through a lot and they deserve a new home McKernon Group President Jack McKernon said. They are a working family who has struggled through tremendous medical problems and difficult living conditions. We are thrilled to be able to help them.
The family, which includes parents Lou and Sara and their two children, Kane who is 3 and Louie Jr who is almost 2, have been living in a hunting camp in Athens for the past 5 years. Louie Jr. was born with several birth defects, including Arthogryposis, club feet and skeletal displasia. He is on both a feeding tube and a breathing tube and is confined to a wheelchair.
The Vitale family was brought to the attention of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition by the local Athens officials, who applied to the show surreptitiously. They were selected from thousands of applicants nationwide. The new home will be built from foundation to roof in just one week, and the familys story, the construction project and the unveiling of the home will be shown in a future episode of the popular program. The unveiling to the family will occur Sept. 12.
Each episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is self-contained and features a race against time on a project that would ordinarily take at least five months to achieve. This involves a team of designers, contractors and several hundred workers and volunteers who will build an entire house, plus the interior and landscaping in four days. The programs design team includes Ty Pennington, a best selling author and the team leader of the show and McKernons design team.
