Whiteface Mountain Regional Visitors Bureau extends welcome

WILMINGTON The community of Wilmington has extended a new welcome to visitors just in time for one of the towns biggest events of the year.

New welcome signs, purchased by the Whiteface Mountain Regional Visitors Bureau, along with banners for the town were installed at the end of August.

Michelle Burns, director of the visitor bureaus member services, said that five signs have been purchased. The white and blue reflective signs have been placed on Route 86, Memorial Highway and by the exit of the ski center.

Burns added that 55 banners, sporting the names of businesses and town landmarks, have also been purchased to hang from the light poles.

Were trying to make Wilmington more attractive and enhance the quality of life, said Burns.

The signs were installed by the Wilmington town crew.

Festival of the Colors
The annual Festival of the Colors will take place on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in Heritage Park in Wilmington. People are invited to enjoy a day of fun with live music, local crafters, fresh product and maple products. Burns said about 30 vendors were expected. Admission is free.

New to the festival this year is a pie baking contest. The public is encouraged to enter an apple of pumpkin pie. After judging, the pies will be sold by the slice to benefit the Whiteface United Methodist Church Food Pantry, which serves the Wilmington region. Judges will include supervisor candidates Randy Preston and Jeanne Ashworth.

The festival will also feature live music provided by Zip City, which provides Chicago Style Blues. Pumpkin painting will be offered for children, along with other activities.

The contest is open to everyone and each contestant can enter as many pies as they wish. Pies are to be dropped off between 10 a.m.-noon, and judging will take place between 1-3 p.m. Winners will be announced at 3:30 p.m. Anyone interested in entering is encouraged to call the visitors bureau in advance to help with the planning of the event. Entry forms and a rules list are also available by calling ahead.
