JEMS board member clarifies point

To the editor:

As a member of the Board of Directors of a non-profit, 501C3 organization, I would like to express my appreciation of the Valley News and other area community newspapers for the breadth and depth of coverage they devote to non-profit organizations, including publication of press releases.

The credibility of such coverage is one important reason why organizations need to ensure that the information they provide in press releases is accurate.

The Jay Entertainment & Music Society (JEMS) submitted a release, which appeared in the Valley News on August 18, 2007, that contained two factual errors that I would like to correct. The release misidentified the JEMS building as The Amos and Julia Ward Community Center; the official name of the building, as was reported by the groups president at our most recent executive session (Aug. 22), is The Amos and Julia Ward Theater.

In addition, the release incorrectly listed the director of the planned holiday musical. The director is Kathy Recchia, who is also producing the show, which JEMS hopes to present in the new theater in December should it be ready. Paul Johnson is involved with the production, including designing the set and working with the performers on vocal music.

JEMS regrets the errors.
